A sheet of Zebrawood veneer

Heartwood is a light brown or cream color with dark blackish brown streaks vaguely resembling a zebra's stripes. Depending on whether the wood is flatsawn or quartersawn, the stripes can be either chaotic and wavy (flatsawn), or somewhat uniform (quartersawn).

Zebrawood — Microberlinia brazzavillensis, sold as zebrano — is exactly as advertised: a pale golden ground with bold dark brown-black stripes running through it, at a contrast level nothing else in the catalog approaches. It is one of the few veneers a non-specialist can name on sight.

How it is cut changes it completely. Quartered zebrawood gives the even, regular, vertical stripe most people picture; flat-cut opens the stripe into wide, wandering swirls that look like a different species. Specify the cut, not just the name.

The contrast is also unforgiving. Every splice line, every mismatch, every leaf that was not sequenced shows immediately, because the eye tracks those stripes across the wall whether you want it to or not. This is material to order as a complete run out of one flitch and to lay up in sequence. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to panel.
