Figured walnut veneer, raw and unfinished

Raw, unfinished veneer. Walnut darkens to its chocolate tones once finish is applied.

American black walnut is the warm end of the architectural palette — chocolate to purple-brown heartwood, with a plain-sliced cathedral figure that is among the most attractive in any species. It is the wood people picture when they picture a boardroom.

Two things are worth specifying rather than assuming. The first is sapwood: walnut logs carry pale sapwood at the edges, and how much of it is acceptable on a face is a grading call. The second is color range — walnut varies genuinely between logs, more than oak does, so a run that must read as one piece needs to come from one flitch.

We hold walnut in raw veneer, two-ply, and paper-backed form, press it to architectural panels on any of our standard cores, and carry walnut crotch and burl for feature work. Hand-graded, kept in sequence, shipped nationwide.
