Royal Ebony Veneer
Pale straw heartwood shot through with decisive black streaks — the ebony that reads light rather than dark, though some leaves come through predominantly black.

Heartwood is a pale straw color, with darker black streaks throughout; some pieces may be predominantly black rather than white. Sapwood is a paler white color, not always clearly defined.
Royal ebony is a pale-heartwood Diospyros — the same genus as macassar and gaboon, but the opposite end of it. The ground is a straw to oatmeal cream, cut through with decisive black streaks that can run the length of a leaf or gather into a broad band. It is also sold as white ebony or pale moon ebony, and it reads light in a room where every other ebony reads dark.
The thing to understand before specifying it is the variation. Within one flitch, leaves run from almost entirely pale with a few black lines to predominantly black with pale flashes — and that spread is the material behaving normally, not a grading failure. A photograph of one leaf is not a description of the flitch.
So do not order royal ebony by name and expect a look. Tell us what proportion of black you want and how big the panel is, and we will pull the leaves that do it and keep them together. Order the full quantity at once — coming back in six weeks means a different flitch and a different balance. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to panel.
