A sheet of Quilted Bubinga veneer

Ranges from a pinkish red to a darker reddish brown with darker purple or black streaks. Sapwood is a pale straw color and is clearly demarcated from the heartwood. Bubinga is very frequently seen with a variety of figure, including: pommele, flamed, waterfall, quilted, mottled, etc.

Bubinga — Guibourtia demeusei, G. tessmannii and G. pellegriniana, sold in Central Africa as kevazingo — is a dense red-brown hardwood that occasionally grows a rolling, three-dimensional quilt. The figure is large in scale, which suits it to big sequenced panels: a boardroom table, a lift lobby, a headboard wall. On anything small it is wasted.

Bubinga has been on CITES Appendix II since January 2017. In practice that means the material travels with permits, and permits show up as lead time rather than as a surprise at the door. Raise it at drawing stage, not at delivery. It is also why bubinga pricing moves differently from other African hardwoods.

The compensation is size: bubinga logs are among the largest that come out of Africa, so quilted bubinga is one of the few dramatic figures available in genuinely wide leaves. If the drawing wants an unbroken figured field rather than a made-up assembly, this is a species that can do it. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to panel.
