The heartwood is a light to medium brown color, though darker streaks can also be seen, which is sometimes sold as Olive Ash. Sapwood can be very wide, and tends to be a beige or light brown; not always clearly or sharply demarcated from heartwood.

Olive ash burl is the burl of European ash, Fraxinus excelsior. "Olive ash" refers to the darker, streaked heartwood the older trees develop — nothing to do with olive trees — and the burl adds swirling clusters of dormant buds over that already-patterned golden ground. It is warm, busy and genuinely rare.

Burl is not sheet material in the ordinary sense. It comes off the log in small, irregular, brittle leaves that will crack if handled raw, so it is supplied paper-backed or two-ply in almost every case. A large olive ash burl panel is a made-up assembly of many leaves, laid up and taped before pressing, not one continuous sheet.

That is a fabrication decision as much as a material one, so bring us the panel dimension early. We will tell you how it has to be assembled and what the joint pattern will look like before anybody commits to a drawing. Available paper-backed, two-ply, and pressed to panel.
