Karelian Birch Burl Veneer
Northern birch with a dense, flame-like internal figure of dark flecks in honey-gold — a genuine rarity.

Typically distorted grain marked with burls, pin knots, color variation, heavy and varied figure patterns.
Karelian birch — Betula pendula var. carelica, also sold as masur birch — is not strictly a burl at all. It is an inherited growth anomaly in northern birch that folds dark flecks and streaks through a honey-gold ground in a flame-like pattern, and the tree carries it through its whole trunk rather than in a lump on the side.
It is genuinely rare. The trees grow slowly, the figure cannot be identified reliably until the log is opened, and the material has been prized in Russia and Scandinavia for two centuries — so it has never been cheap and it has never been plentiful. Leaves are small and no two are alike.
Treat it as a feature: an inlay, a small door, a box, a center panel. It is not field material and specifying it for a large elevation will end in disappointment about the quantity rather than the wood. Tell us the finished size and we will tell you what is available. Available paper-backed, two-ply, and pressed to panel.
