Cypress is a softwood and the only one on this list, which is the point of it: pale golden brown, straight and quiet in the grain, and noticeably lighter in weight than the hardwoods around it. Southern or bald cypress is what the trade usually means, and it earned its reputation on durability — it was the timber for water tanks and exterior work long before anyone sliced it for veneer.

Pecky cypress is the version most people are actually asking for. The pockets running through it are left by a fungus that attacks the standing tree and dies the moment the tree is felled, so what you are specifying is an old, arrested decay pattern, not an active one. It is highly variable by definition. Two leaves from the same log can differ enormously in how much peck they carry, and there is no grading rule that will make them match — if the look matters, approve the actual leaves.

Being softer than the hardwoods, it marks more easily, which is worth weighing for a surface at hand height. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to architectural panels.
