Curly Maple Veneer
Rippling, three-dimensional curl across the grain that shifts as you move past it — also called tiger or flame maple.

Hard Maple with a distinctive curly or tiger-stripe figure that creates alternating light and dark bands perpendicular to the grain. Color ranges from nearly white sapwood to light golden brown heartwood. The curly figure catches and reflects light, creating a rippled, three-dimensional appearance.
Curly maple — also sold as tiger, flame or fiddleback maple, and the reason the back of a violin looks the way it does — is maple whose fibers grew in a regular wave rather than straight. Sliced across, that wave reads as rippling bands running perpendicular to the grain.
What you are seeing is not color. It is light reflecting off fiber ends at alternating angles, which is why the bands reverse as you move past them and why the figure appears to roll across the surface. A flat photograph cannot show it, and a 3-inch sample under a desk lamp barely can either.
That has one real consequence for specification: a book-match mirrors the direction of the curl as well as the grain, so the two halves of a book-matched panel will read as light and dark from any given viewing position, and swap as you cross the room. Decide whether that is the effect you want before layup. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to panel.
