Black Mottled Makore Veneer
African makore carrying a fine dark mottle over deep red-brown — restrained but unmistakably figured.

Makore with a pronounced dark mottled figure, creating a dramatic contrast of dark brown to near-black patches against a reddish-brown background. The mottled pattern is caused by interlocked grain reflecting light at different angles, producing a shimmering, three-dimensional effect.
Makore — Tieghemella heckelii, also sold as African cherry or baku — is a West African hardwood with a deep, even red-brown ground. The mottle is what makes this one worth specifying: a fine, close-set cross figure that breaks the surface into shifting bands without the theatrics of a curl or a quilt. It is restrained figure, which is why it turns up in boardrooms rather than feature walls.
The color is not fixed. Makore arrives a lighter pinkish red and settles toward a deeper, browner red over the first months of light exposure, so a sample signed off in March does not describe the wall in September. If a job is phased, keep the material together rather than letting half of it age on a rack — a late panel will visibly lag the rest until it catches up.
One practical note for whoever is machining it: makore carries silica, which is hard on tooling, and its dust is a well-known respiratory irritant. Your shop will already know this; it is worth saying out loud at specification stage anyway. Available raw, two-ply, paper-backed, and pressed to panel, sequenced from one flitch.
