A sheet of Amboyna Burl veneer

Amboyna Burl is among the most prized and expensive burls in the world. Color ranges from reddish-orange to deep red-brown, with dense, swirling burl eyes that create a three-dimensional depth. The figure is tightly packed with small knots and eyes that catch light from every angle.

Amboyna is the burl of narra — Pterocarpus indicus — from Southeast Asia, and it is one of the most valuable veneers in the world. The ground glows orange-red to deep amber and the eyes are tight, brilliant and densely packed. Under finish it does something almost no other burl does: it appears lit from within.

Supply is the constraint, not demand. Narra is not plantation-grown at any scale, the burl is a defect the tree happens to grow rather than something anybody can plan for, and the leaves come off it small. Paperwork around the genus has also been moving: CITES listed the African populations of Pterocarpus in February 2023, and although narra is a Southeast Asian species outside that listing, it is worth asking us to confirm what documentation applies at the time you order rather than at delivery.

It is feature material and priced accordingly. Amboyna arrives in small leaves, is supplied backed rather than raw, and belongs on a door face, a cabinet front or an inset panel where it can be the only thing happening. Tell us the finished size first. Available paper-backed, two-ply, and pressed to panel.
