A sheet of Burl Maple veneer

Unlike most other hardwoods, the sapwood of maple lumber is most commonly used rather than its heartwood. Sapwood color ranges from almost white, to a light golden or reddish brown, while the heartwood is a darker reddish brown. Silver Maple can also be seen with curly or quilted grain patterns.

Maple burl is a growth anomaly rather than a species: clusters of dormant buds that never opened, packed tight in a pale maple ground and sliced across to show as swirling eyes with almost no directional grain at all. Cluster burl is the densest grade of it, and the one most people are picturing.

Like every burl it arrives in small, irregular, fragile leaves. Raw maple burl will crack if it is handled the way a straight-grained sheet is handled, so it is supplied paper-backed or two-ply as a matter of course, and a big panel is an assembly rather than a sheet.

Its advantage over the darker burls is the pale ground: maple burl sits under a light or clear finish without going muddy, and it holds a room without darkening it. Tell us the panel size and we will tell you what can be covered from one lot. Available paper-backed, two-ply, and pressed to panel.
